In the Light of Scripture Overview

What is possibly the one thing that Christians can do that would have a positive impact on our country today? They can stop voting for liberals. In The Light Of Scripture: Why Christians Shouldnt Vote For Liberals takes an in-depth look at why casting a vote for a liberal politician is harmful to our society. Exciting new author Artie Gross takes a look at how Christians are influenced when making their voting decisions and offers insight into how those decisions should be made. Whether you are a Christian or not, this book is a must read if you have any concern for the future of this country. Limbaugh Sr., reveal a good man, a Christian man, who at age 99 when the interviews occurred was living an extraordinary life of achievement and service. Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto Overview

When nationally syndicated radio host Mark R. Levin’s Liberty and Tyranny appeared in the early months of the Obama presidency, Americans responded by making his clarion call for a new era in conservatism a #1 New York Times bestseller for an astounding twelve weeks. As provocative, well-reasoned, robust, and informed as his on-air commentary, with his love of our country and the legacy of our Founding Fathers reflected on every page, Levin’s galvanizing narrative provides a philosophical, historical, and practical framework for revitalizing the conservative vision and ensuring the preservation of American society.

In the face of the modern liberal assault on Constitution-based values, an attack that has resulted in a federal government that is a massive, unaccountable conglomerate, the time for reinforcing the intellectual and practical case for conservatism is now. In a series of powerful essays, Levin lays out how conservatives can counter the tyrannical liberal corrosion that has filtered into every timely issue affecting our daily lives, from the economy to health care, global warming to immigration, and more.

The Grand Jihad: How Islam and the Left Sabotage America Overview

The real threat to the United States is not terrorism. The real threat is Islamism, whose sophisticated forces have collaborated with the American Left not only to undermine U.S. national security but also to shred the fabric of American constitutional democracy—freedom and individual liberty. In The Grand Jihad: How Islam and the Left Sabotage America, bestselling author Andrew C. McCarthy offers a harrowing account of how the global Islamist movement’s jihad involves far more than terrorist attacks, and how it has found the ideal partner in President Barack Obama, whose Islamist sympathies run deep.

For years, McCarthy warned of America’s blindness to the Islamist threat, but in The Grand Jihad McCarthy exposes a new, more insidious peril: the government’s active appeasement of the Islamist ideology. With the help of witting and unwitting accomplices in and out of government, Islamism doesn’t merely fuel terrorism but spawns America-hating Islamic enclaves in our very midst, gradually foisting Islam’s repressive law, sharia, on American life. The revolutionary doctrine has made common cause with an ascendant Left that also seeks radical transformation of our constitutional order. The prognosis for liberty could not be more dire.

I Can't Believe You Said That! Hundreds of Liberals Speak Their Minds Overview

I Can't Believe You Said That! Hundreds of Liberals Speak Their Minds is a compilation of quotes from more than 300 influential leftists, including presidents, poets, preachers, and professors. There are close to 700 quotations, and they reveal more about liberalism and leftist thinking than a six-month seminar by Bill Ayers, Noam Chomsky, or Ward Churchill. Conservative author Fred Gielow makes the case that based on what they've said, these folks want to transform America into a communist dream, remove Christianity from society, imprison gun owners, give animals special rights, and take children away from their parents. Though their reputation is compassion, many liberals are anything but, if you believe their own words.

Give Us Liberty: A Tea Party Manifesto Overview

This groundbreaking manifesto is essential reading for tea party activists—or any American seeking to understand what the Tea Party is fighting for and what's next for the movement

Former House Majority Leader Dick Armey and Matt Kibbe have been on the front lines of one of the fastest-growing and most influential political phenomena in recent memory: the Tea Party movement. As the leaders of the advocacy organization FreedomWorks, they have helped guide and give voice to hundreds of thousands of activists from across the country and have a strong vision for the future of this powerful grassroots uprising.

United by a strong belief in limited government and individual liberty, Tea Party members are changing the American political landscape. Unlike mainstream media accounts that observe the Tea Party movement from the outside looking in, Give Us Liberty chronicles the roots and rise of a new breed of taxpayer activism in the voices of those who were there. Discover the personalities that drove the first meetings, the unknown candidates whose principled stand earned them unlikely victories, the march that gathered more than a million activists, and the bedrock beliefs that brought them together.

In this national call to action, Armey and Kibbe provide an intimate history of the movement, explain how citizens can join the cause, and chart the future of the Tea Party—and America. Give Us Liberty also contains a battle-tested, step-by-step guide to organizing and effecting change in any community.

Censorship: The Threat to Silence Talk Radio Overview

"Talk radio is the American voter." -- Rush Limbaugh

Freedom of speech. It is our most cherished privilege as Americans, guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution since 1791. But at the dawn of a new presidential administration, an epic battle is looming -- a battle for our airwaves that could sharply curtail or silence altogether the freedom of expression that distinguishes America from the average dictatorship. The target of this battle is conservative talk radio.

If key Democrats have their way, the principles of the Federal Communications Commission's Fairness Doctrine will once again be enforced and allow government to control the content heard on free radio, a mandate that will have far-reaching implications for all media.

During the Reagan administration the FCC voted to stop enforcing the Fairness Doctrine, which required all licensed broadcasters to present "balanced" viewpoints on controversial issues.

Conservative talk radio burgeoned, giving rise to the father of conservative talk, Rush Limbaugh, and such hosts as Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, Michael Medved, Neal Boortz, Laura Ingraham, and others. The format was a smash hit -- resonating with listeners from coast to coast and giving a powerful voice to the conservative movement. Soon such programming, attracting an estimated 50 million listeners weekly, dominated the airwaves where liberal talk radio failed. Popular, profitable, outspoken, powerful, influential -- it's what the American people wanted, and its success was the Democrats' worst nightmare.

Now, the principles of the Fairness Doctrine threaten to be reinstated -- if not directly, then through back-door tactics involving ownership of stations. Under cover of being "fair," they will prove to be anything but: They will be used as a means of censorship by those with contempt for conservative talk radio. With our current Congress firmly under Democratic control, the future of talk radio -- indeed, freedom of speech for all Americans -- is under direct attack.

The Post-American Presidency: The Obama Administration's War on America Overview

Popular conservative blogger Pamela Geller and New York Times bestselling author Robert Spencer sound a wake-up call for Americans to stop the Obama administration from limiting our hard-won freedoms, silencing our democratic voices, and irreparably harming America for generations to come.

America is being tested in a way that she has never been tested before. Since taking the oath of office in January 2009, President Barack Obama has cheered our enemies and demoralized our allies. He is hard at work "remaking" America by destroying the free-market system and nationalizing major segments of our economy, demonizing dissent and restricting freedom of speech, turning against our longtime friends, and above all, subjecting us to the determinations of foreign authorities.

In this timely and urgent battle cry, Pamela Geller, founder of the widely popular website www.AtlasShrugs.com, and New York Times bestselling author Robert Spencer team up to expose the Obama administration’s destructive agenda—largely ignored by the mainstream media—and rally Americans to protect the sovereignty of a country that is under siege by the highest levels of its own government. As Americans see their paychecks shrinking every day, Obama ignores our forefathers’ founding principle: individual rights. Instead, he seeks to level the playing field—to transform both the global and national landscape in favor of our enemies—even if it means cutting America off at the knees. He envisions himself as more than just a president of the United States, but as a shaper of the new world order, an internationalist energetically laying the groundwork for global government: the president of the world.

A vital guide to helping conservatives prepare for the tough battles ahead, The Post-American Presidency critically examines the Obama administration’s ominous and revealing moves against our basic freedoms, particularly as he seizes control of the three engines of the American economy: health care, energy, and education. The Shining City on a Hill has gone dark. But America is not dead. The time is NOW to stand up and fight.

Misstating the State of the Union: Right-Wing Media Distortions About the Clinton and Bush Presidencies Review

Misstating the State of the Union: Right-Wing Media Distortions About the Clinton and Bush Presidencies Overview

Misstating the State of the Union reveals a simple truth that the media too often obscures: By every objective measure, the Clinton presidency was immeasurably better for America than the Bush presidency. Yet an army of conservative pundits have conspired to lie to the public about both the Clinton and Bush records, denying the proven success of progressive policies and leadership while shamelessly covering up abject conservative failures. This book dissects the conservative misinformation campaign to distort and discredit the progressive agenda point by point, while unmasking the dark ideological agenda and rank dishonesty behind all the cable TV and radio hot air.

From Rush Limbaugh's claim that the federal government spends three times as much on education as defense (the truth: the government spends five times as much on defense as on education) to Sean Hannity's dismissal of air-quality concerns ("This is silly") to Ann Coulter's attacks on the elderly ("39 million greedy geezers collecting Social Security"), Misstating the State of the Union concisely refutes many of the most dangerous right-wing lies in circulation in this political year, using sound logic, incontrovertible fact, and illustrative charts and graphs.

Misstating the State of the Union is the first book produced by Media Matters Action Network, the advocacy organization associated with Media Matters for America, a new not-for-profit web-based research and information center in Washington, D.C. that monitors, analyzes, and corrects conservative misinformation in the U.S. media. In just a few short months, Media Matters for America, founded by David Brock, author of Blinded by the Right: The Conscience of an Ex-Conservative and The Republican Noise Machine : Right-Wing Media and How It Corrupts Democracy, has established itself as a key resource on conservative misinformation for both producers and consumers of news. The Truth About Obamacare Overview

In her new book, The Truth About Obamacare, Sally C. Pipes—president of the Pacific Research Institute and an acknowledged expert on health care reform—reveals what Democrats in Congress and President Obama don't want you to know: Obamacare is even worse than most critics suspect. Debunking the myths that the current administration has touted, Pipes shows exactly what the new health care law will mean for you, your family, your doctor, and your wallet. She also reveals how, contrary to its promises, Obamacare will make health care more expensive, limit your options, lead to deteriorating medical care, and weaken America’s already frail economy.

Great American Hypocrites: Toppling the Big Myths of Republican Politics Overview

SURGEON GENERAL’S WARNING:
Falling for the Marlboro Man marketing and sleazy takedown tactics of the Republican Party can be hazardous to the health of this nation!

Ever since the cowboy image of Ronald Reagan was sold to Americans, the Republican Party has used the same John Wayne imagery to support its candidates and take elections. We all know how they govern, but the right-wing propaganda machine is very adept at hijacking debate and marketing their candidates as effectively as the Marlboro Man.

For example:

Myth: The Republican nominee is an upstanding, regular guy who shares the values of the common man.
Reality: He divorced his first wife in order to marry a young multimillionaire heiress whose family then funded his political career.

Myth: Republicans are strong on defense and will keep us safe.
Reality: They prey on fears, and their endless wars make America far less secure.

Myth: Republicans are the party of fiscal restraint and small, limited government.
Reality: Soaring deficits, unchecked presidential power, and an increasingly invasive surveillance state are par for their course.

  • Protesters in knickers and colonial-style hats march on Washington with signs that order Hitler-like caricatures of President Obama to return to Kenya.

As madness reigns, pundits, politicians, and cab drivers debate the source of the hysteria. Some blame ignorance; some blame racism; some blame the economy.

After poring over mountains of political screeds and heedlessly subjecting himself to countless hours of Fox News, author Michael Wolraich discovered the secret formula that turns ordinary men and women into fire-breathing, smoke-blowing, right wing maniacs. It’s “persecution politics” . . again.

In Blowing Smoke, Wolraich documents, dissects, and deconstructs the myths that underlie the right’s growing reliance on the politics of persecution, from Joe McCarthy to the Tea Party movement. In the process, he delivers an original and compelling hypothesis with penetrating insight and blistering wit.

At turns hilarious, disturbing, and edifying, Blowing Smoke is a must-read account of modern American politics.

Blowing Smoke: Why the Right Keeps Serving Up Whack-Job Fantasies about the Plot to Euthanize Grandma, Outlaw Christmas, and Turn Junior into a Raging Homosexual Review

I really loved this book. It does a great job of giving you a framework through which to dissect the ridiculous arguments spewed on Fox and talk radio. It actually gets to be somewhat comical listening to conservative pundits once you realize that they use the exact same argument for virtually every issue:

1) Slippery slope. If we allow gay marriage, we'll have to allow human-toad marriage!
2) Conspiracy. George Soros, the ACLU, ACORN, and the "liberal elite" are beyond everything and have a secret plan to take away your rights!
3) Persecution as a mask for intolerance. I'm not homophobic, but if we legalize gay marriage, priests who refuse to marriage same-sex couples will go to jail. I'm standing up for the priests!
4) Zero sum. If we give more healthcare benefits to the poor, it will destroy healthcare for the rich. And its socialism.

It's also amazing to me to see how the same arguments have been used through history, whether its based on interracial marriage, communism, or equal rights. Arguments that we would consider ridiculous today ("I'm not racist. I want segregated schools because its best for both blacks and whites") are the basis for the flawed arguments we hear today.

Of course, tea partiers and hard-line conservatives won't read this book, but that's not the author's point. His point is to help everyday Americans (dare I say, "real Americans") de-construct persecution politics and either combat it or at least not fall under its spell. There's nothing wrong with Republican or conservative values, but there is something wrong with the way pundits are using racism, homophobia, xenophobia, and conspiracy theories to manipulate us for their own gain.

A Must-Read for Any Progressive - BK - New York, NY USA
Wolriach presents a well-researched, plainly stated case why Americans should be worried about the the so-called grass roots Tea Party, Fox News, and conservative talk radio. There's so much opinion out there on the TV and blogs, it's sometimes hard to separate truth from fiction. This book cuts through the fog of BS that is crowdiing out rational discourse. Where other people have opinions, this book is based on a deep examination of the historical roots of today's right wing backlash.

He Knows What's Going On - Marcus Aurelius - Brooklyn, NY United States
Our politics have become a bit... um... amped up lately, haven't they? Michael Wolraich could have taken it easy and just did a short and funny litany of extremist uterrings from the right. Instead, he took a more thoughtful approach. Why does our electorate believe things that are clearly false? Why is there so much misinformation in our politics? Wolraich brings the funny, don't worry about that, but this book as some enduring potential too. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to get beyond namecalling. A fun but serious book.

Why We're Liberals: A Political Handbook for Post-Bush America Review

It's all here in spades.

While some books are very thin on facts and heavy on opinion this book is just the opposite- for every point he makes, the author backs it up with numerous and highly memorable statistics, studies, relevant examples from recent and past history before finally giving the reader an overall perspective on each issue. For instance, when he debunks the notion of a liberal media, he does so by not through ranting but through citing studies which tallied the number of liberal talking heads that have appeared on the Sunday shows over the past years, how many hours of total time anyone resembling a liberal gets on cable and network T.V.. When he talks about how little conservatives are willing to deal in shades of gray on issues, he gives numerous very cogent examples of exactly this then goes on to cite studies that show things like people who self-identify themselves as conservatives have less activity in their prefrontal cortexes when they attempt to resolve ambiguous visual stimuli in laboratory conditions, i.e. is that letter an "M" or a "N"?

If you're looking for facts you can use in conversation or debate, you'd better be ready to take notes. Can you remember every hypocritical Congressman or Senator or political figure of the right who attacked Clinton or gays or drug addicts or the left while engaging in exactly the behavior they were self-righteously condemning? Can you remember their names and positions and what they said and exactly what they did? I lived through all the examples he cites and was disgusted by each, but I have to confess I forgot the names and details. To see them all paraded here was edifying and astonishing- I had no idea there were so many of them and that they were so shamelessly hypocritical; I'm now a lot more fun at Thanksgiving dinner. For instance, Newt Gingrich is gearing up to Being Somebody another go. He lead the charge to impeach Clinton. He's also the guy who dumped his first wife, who put him through college, with the words "she's not young enough or pretty enough to be a First Lady" and served her divorce papers at her hospital bed where she was being treated for cancer, then went on to marry a younger woman, then dumped HER later when she came down with MS and finally married another woman 23 years his junior. Still he thought himself in a position to lecture the country, and the Clintons, about the importance of family values and the sanctity of marriage and all that.

Another example: I didn't know that there was a measure of health care which specifically isolates "cure rate of diseases which are amenable to treatment". This is important because it shows very starkly just how mediocre American health care really is compared to other countries. This is not something you'll learn about on Fox.

This is a high quality work. Conservatives will hate it and quite frankly it's hard to imagine them reading it through, so the audience is probably the converted, but it's well worth the time it requires to read it. You'll come away with a ton of facts which, even if you're politically savvy, you probably haven't heard before and which taken together devastate a long list of conservative articles of faith such as, "America was founded as a Christian country" or "Europe is in economic decline" or "the U.S. has the best health care in the world" or "there's a liberal bias in the media" or "the majority of people are conservative" or "the economic golden age of 1945-60 in this country was a result of low taxes and limited government".

A solid work, a moral work, packed with memorable and effective facts. All stuff, no fluff. Enjoy.

Why We're Liberals: A Political Handbook for Post-Bush America Overview

The bestselling author demolishes myths about liberalism in a spirited polemic

Thanks to the machinations of the right, there is no dirtier word in American politics today than “liberal”—yet public opinion polls consistently show that the majority of Americans hold liberal views on everything from health care to foreign policy. In this feisty, accessible primer, bestselling author Eric Alterman sets out to restore liberalism to its rightful honored place in our political life as the politics of America’s everyday citizens.

In Why We’re Liberals Alterman examines liberalism’s development and demonstrates how its partisans have come to represent not just the mainstream, but also the majority of Americans today. In a crisply argued though extensively documented counterattack on right-wing spin and misinformation, Alterman briskly disposes of such canards as “Liberals Hate God” and “Liberals Are Soft on Terrorism,” reclaiming liberalism from the false definitions foisted upon it by the right and repeated everywhere else. Why We’re Liberals brings clarity and perspective to what has often been a one-sided debate for nothing less than the heart and soul of America. Why We’re Liberals is the perfect election-year book for all of those ready to fight back against the conservative mud-slinging machine and claim their voice in the political debate.

Defense of Liberalism - J.L. Populist - WI,USA
Eric Alterman defends the word and ideology that a lot of conservatives have made a career out of smearing.
Liberalism is much more than a label and Mr. Alterman does a good job of explaining the truth about the political themes and beliefs of liberalism and he is correct about Democrats preference for identifying themselves as "Progressives" rather than "liberals".

A lot of "liberal" policies are much more popular that conservatives will ever admit and the purpose of this book is to "open the way for Americans to get the government they repeatedly say they want."

He also debunks the myth of a "liberal media bias" by exposing the fact that token liberals are seldom really liberals but moderate Democrats. Liberal views are seldom presented, much less defended in American media. The fact is that the media bias is more conservative. Not just Fox News but the other major media groups mimic Fox News for ratings. PBS and LinkTV air more of the liberal views.
One can't help but notice what Alterman is writing about when viewing the major news broadcasts.

Mr. Alterman also provided a quote from Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations" that reveals a liberal philosophy on government. You won't hear or read that quote very often in the main-stream media!
He discusses the link between liberal politics and Christianity that gets lost in the current Christian connection with the conservative Republicans.

Another interesting subject is the impact that the internet and blogs in particular have had on connecting liberals.

On page 208 the author writes- "The prophetic warning of James Madison in Federalist Paper No. 10, that 'a religious sect may degenerate into a political faction' has come to fruition 200 years later in the contemporary conservative movement."
On that same movement he adds that it is "dominated by censorious Christian fundamentalists, favor-seeking corporate CEOs, and neoconservative ideologues dreaming of a global empire." From page 264. He astutely identifies the make-up of the conservatives.

One of the complaints that Mr. Alterman has of the liberal Democrats is that they don't defend their ideology in the event that they really have continued to believe in it.

This is an entertaining book and the author presents an effective defense of liberalism.
It includes 45 pages of Notes and an Index at the end of the book.

Bush bashing - Gerald Ambroze - Galveston TX USA
I am an indepedent and wanted to learn more about liberalism. I found the book loading with so called facts that are untrue. Europe standard of living is poor compared to America yet you would think Europe is paradise. Why do so many people continue to want to come to America? I did not learn anything about liberalism.

A book every liberal (and non-liberal) should read - C. Washington - New York, NY
What an amazing defense of liberalism. But what's sad is that liberalism even needs to be defended in the first place. What Alterman does is set down facts and evidence that will make you see that conservatives in this country will do and say about anything to get power and keep it. He makes it known that the right wing has demonized the term "liberal" and "liberalism" when in fact the country is leaning more and more towards what the real definition of "liberalism" is. Definitely a book every liberal (and non-liberal) needs to read.

Accurate explanation of liberalism - 1st-heretic - Earth
This book gets four stars because part one is a moaning about how liberals (real ones) have lost opportunities.

The essence of the book is in part two. Here Mr Alterman takes stereotypes (put out by the lunatic fringe of the conservatives) about liberals and proves how wrong the stereotypes are.

Most people who consider themselves "conservative" are honest, peaceful, hard-working, law-abiding, God-loving persons. So are most liberals. However, the lunatic fringe -- a very tiny percentage of the conservative group -- is extremely vocal, virulent, and strident. People like Limbaugh, Coulter, et at (the "pundits") promote hatred and fear, tell vicious lies, call themselves "Christians" (but don't follow the basic precepts of their own religion), encourage divisions between people, show blatant prejudice to minorities, etc.

It is the lies by the pundits of the conservative lunatic fringe that, unfortunately, get broadcast, and too many people believe them. So this book is an antidote for the virulent hatred of the radical right.

Absolute Power: The Legacy of Corruption in the Clinton-Reno Justice Department Review

The two greatest organizations for enforcing the law under the Clinton and Reno administration politicized the law, weakened justice, and brought politics under the influence of big business because political parties differences eroded to a point where a single individuals influence in the party was considered minimal; the goal of such erosion was to reduce polarization of ideas, allowing increased influence from the special interests groups; the special interests groups used money to open import businesses, get contracts, buy weapons, gain most-favored-nation status, decrease legal penalties and soften constitutional intent.

David Limbaugh hedges towards demonstrating how the Clinton and Reno administration found loopholes in the law, extended the interpretation of the law, used obscure laws to establish precedents, bombarded their opponents using trial-lawyer-rhetoric and accusatory, false witnesses as diversionary tactics, and pitted the United States against the United States by creating conflicting interests within government organizations; thus, the Justice Department became a political arm of the Executive Branch. The cases are: Waco (military usage in civilian affair), Linda Tripp (privacy act violation), Campaign scandal (soft money in the Democratic National Committee (DNC)), discrediting of Kenneth Star (conflict of interest), Elian Gonzalez (political pressure to overturn the courts). Waco is a wake up call! Clinton would say the incident at Waco was a tragedy, but he could not control a fanatic who decided to kill himself and everyone at Waco. A review board analyzed the governments handling of Waco and found no wrong doing. Limbaugh presented a different story and revealed a number of blatant lies.

Why attack Koresh? Koresh's original name was Veron Howell. The Koresh group was a break-off, apostate, dissenting group from the original Seventh Day Adventist organization. Divisions occurred over the doctrine of spiritual (White: Something happened in heaven) versus physical (Davidic throne) manifestation of Christs second coming and the particular date this event would occur. Howell claims to be the seventh messenger for the seventh seal as recorded in the Book of Revelation in the Bible.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) becomes involved in watching the activities on the Waco (Mount Carmel, TX) compound. Dispute over ownership occurs between Howell and Roden; Roden forces the ATF to petition for US military assistance because Roden has set up a methamphetamine lab, but at the time of the petition, the lab was dysfunctional; Roden challenged Howell to a contest to determine who was God; Howell had a sexual relationship with Lois Roden, who was sixty, thinking she was like the biblical Sarah, and he would produce offspring with her; Roden digs up a 20-year-dead corpse and challenges Howell to bring the corpse back to life; Howell declines; Howell reports Rodens activities to the authorities; Roden is charged with contempt of court; Howell gains possession of the property and the followers; Howell changes his name to David Koresh; Koresh claims to be the Messiah to bring about the end-of-time prophecy; reports of Koresh beating children surface (he boasts 17 wives and 11 children, many of the wives were under-aged); Marc Breault, a disgruntled member, prods the sheriff to take action; Child Protective Services becomes involved; June 9, 1992, ATF begins an open investigation. Dummy hand grenades were discovered, there were purchases of aluminum and black powder, and evidence of 40,000 AR-15 rifles (convertible to a machine gun). The Fed does not prohibit possession of a machine gun; however, it does require a registration for each weapon, a registration Koresh did not complete. A warrant is obtained based on this evidence; Koresh is seen leaving the Mount Carmel premises, no arrest is made because a dynamic raid is preferred; Koresh was tipped off according to Robert Rodrigues, 76 agents staged the raid, they were exposed to Koresh during unload, but no shots were fired.

The 1878 Posse Comitatus Act restricted military involvement in civilian law enforcement because military is used to fight wars, not enforce the law, with the exception of drugs; there was evidence surfacing the Koresh residents were anticipating a peaceful resolution; Reno justified force because she believed 1) there was no reason to believe Koresh would voluntary come out 2) the health and jeopardy of the children were at risk 3) the Hostage rescue team was fatigued; the hostage rescue team wanted action, and the experts urged caution. The two groups were at odds with each other, but eventually, the team acted. A tank pushed through a wall and either knocked over the kerosene lamps, starting a fire, or Koresh committed mass suicide. Why would Koresh murder his people? He had not finished his mission. The tactics employed by the Hostage Rescue team follow a military strategy, and casualties are expected; "strike first, strike hard, no compromise" is the message. Why was a military force strategy employed in a local, law enforcement situation?

I find it interesting - Dennis Thompson - Orlando,Fl
People who complain about the truth never have any facts to back it up. Womnder why? Those Facts do not exist. If the David Barrett report is ever realeased...Hillary and Bill will be in line for a prison term.

The truth is out there. Facts are out there and David L has put out a book that people who want truth and can think for themselves will find.

Its interesting because in the past 6 months so much had come out. Facts regarding WMD's and Al Quaeda's ties with Iraq. The tuth needs to be spoken and this book speaks out loud and clear. A must read.

Lazy Clip Job - Cioran Sellers - NYC
Well of course this is biased nonsense. What did you expect? That's not my trouble with this book, as I expect nothing less from Rush's little brother. What did depress me was how lazily thrown together it was, like maybe Rush had a few of his interns dig up some Washington Times articles for David to weave together into a partisan rant. Also a tad distressing was the lack of any sort of historical perspective, on say what Ed Meese got up to let alone Nixon's crook Mitchell. (Though again this is standard party trick of right wing hacks so no surprise.) I am vaguely interested in whether David actually believes this stuff, as "The Legacy of Corruption" has the whiff of utter cynicism and making a buck off the rubes...

I HATE BILL CLINTON ........ - Randall - Long Beach, California USA
....is what the title of this book should read. Limbaugh clearly has an agenda here. If your republican you'll love this, if your democrat you'll hate it. Big surprise!!

Absolutely Enthralling! - Britt Gillette - Chesapeake, VA United States
A nationally syndicated columnist and bestselling author of two books, David Limbaugh performs the duties the mainstream media used to perform decades ago with his page-turning expose "Absolute Power: The Legacy of Corruption in the Clinton-Reno Justice Department". Few non-fiction books in the past ten years have held me captive like this one.

During the 1992 campaign, and throughout the Clinton presidency, Americans heard reports of various Clinton administration improprieties. Sometimes, as was the case with Monica Lewinsky, we actually witnessed the scandals unfold. But rarely would the mainstream media afford the public more than a cursory overview of such activities. Simply put, David Limbaugh does the job the mainstream media should have.

With chapters that run the gambit on such topics as Waco, the Tobacco Wars, Billy Dale and The White House Travel Office, Monica Lewinsky, presidential pardons to benefit Hillary's Senate campaign, and Elian Gonzalez, Absolute Power is one of the premiere historical records cataloguing the innumerable scandals that plagued Bill Clinton's presidency. Surprisingly, readers will find little commentary. I can find no instance of the author offering his own opinion. Instead, his book reads like a newspaper description of a public event (or at least in the days before liberal media bias). The book contains extensive footnotes and source references, quoting FBI agents and high-ranking officials on the record by name, rather than by quoting "anonymous sources"...

The result is a genuine breath of fresh air. I was fifteen when the storming of the Waco compound took place. Yet despite the abundance of media coverage, I knew few details regarding the incident itself and the people surrounding it before reading this book. David Limbaugh fills in the details about the life of David Koresh, the history of Waco, and all of the other topics previously listed in a way the major media outlets have failed to do since those events occurred.

Readers of Absolute Power will be left breathless by its vivid illustration of a presidential administration willing to use the courts and agents of federal law enforcement to achieve its own political ends. Had David Limbaugh published this book just one year earlier, no American would have been surprised by Al Gore's attempts to circumvent election law in Florida. Although, optimist that I am, I'd like to believe that had this book been published one year earlier, the 2000 presidential election would not have been so close...

The Republican Noise Machine: Right-Wing Media and How It Corrupts Democracy Review

David Brock has written a detailed and brilliant expose of a multi-decade long assault on journalistic ethics and objectivity for political reasons by certain elements of the GOP. Brock is in a position to know (having worked as right-wing hack for decades himself). Brock's writing is direct and his research thorough. He presents his argument relentlessly. He follows the money, names all the names, and reveals his sources. Once you see and understand the way that news reporting is being manipulated in the media you'll never look at the news the same way again. Brock has taught me to recognize the sources and tone of phony manipulated news and now I see it everywhere. I can't recommend this book more highly for any educated person.

Essentially the Republican noise machine was creates as a deliberate strategy to promote conservative views and talking points in the mainstream media (television, newspapers, radio etc...) The strategy features three main strategies: 1) foster the illusion that the mainstream media has a liberal bias, 2) create a phony academic body of entities (primarily think tanks, but also funded university programs) to manufacture "scholarship" that promotes the right-wing talking points so that they appear objective, 3) leverage the perception of liberal bias in the media to demand "equal time" for presentation of the laundered right-wing media talking points as news.

The roots of the right-wing noise machine start back in the days of Goldwater. The civil rights movement succeeded in part because of the public outrage following television news coverage of civil rights protests and backlash. Nixon's new republican coalition of South and West was based in part by frustrated southern racist feeling stymied by a de-facto media position of racial tolerance. Later, the Vietnam war's outcome was partially determined by public protest in the US and the media coverage of the war and the anti-war protests. Brock traces the roots of the strategy for the noise machine in detail - both the writing that defined the strategy and the individuals and entities which funded and created the various organizations that were created to carry out the work. It's not conspiracy theory because the whole thing is mostly out in the open. It's easy to check the facts and I've done so. I'm totally convinced.

The fruits of the right-wing noise machine aren't simply the echo chamber of right wing radio and Fox TV shows that pick up stories and then quote each other to up the air time and give the appearance of validity. It's also been a relentless moving of the main body of mainstream media further to the right. This has led to a host of consequences ranging from millions of taxpayer dollars being wasted on right-wing anti-Clinton witch hunts in the Whitewater and Vince Foster cases to the fact that much of the coverage of the Bush administration in the first term and half consisted of basically reprinting the press releases without critical evaluation. Brock gives dozens (perhaps hundreds) of examples.

There are times when the wealth of information in this book get in the way of the narrative. However, this wealth becomes valuable if you choose to really get into it. Brock has built an irrefutable argument. Those who dismiss it are either specifically partisan, or haven't read it. All this data is rigorously end noted. You can chase every bit of it down yourself. Brock's thesis seemed pretty outrageous to me at first - so I double checked him. I found him spot on. That's when I started delving more deeply into what I was reading in the media myself and I started discovering the bias for myself first hand (for example there were allegations in the recent election coverage that Acorn was involved in the explosion of bad debt that caused the recent economic collapse and that Obama was involved in that - reported in the NY Post. It was all specious and it turned out to be sourced from a "consumer group" that had just been created by a man who was on the board of the libertarian Cato Institute. All this isn't in the book - but an example of how this book taught me to think critically and I've been able to independently verify the noise machine's existence and tactics myself).

This is very good stuff indeed. If you want to know Brock's story, I recommend his memoir "Blinded by the Right" which fully details his earlier career writing right wing hit books like "The Real Anita Hill". This book is radically different from that. This is Brock wearing his investigative journalist hat. This book is a synthesis from other sources - there's very little original reporting here. It's a brilliant synthesis that ties it all together. The conclusions sound outrageous (and indeed they are) - but the outrage is real.

The Republican Noise Machine: Right-Wing Media and How It Corrupts Democracy Overview

Bestselling author David Brock documents the most important political development of the last thirty years: How the Republican Right has won political power and hijacked public discourse in the United States.

Over the last several decades, the GOP has built a powerful media machine—newspapers and magazines, think tanks, talk radio networks, op-ed columnists, the FOX News Channel, Christian Right broadcasting, book publishers, and high-traffic Internet sites—to sell conservatism to the public and discredit its opponents. David Brock’s penetrating analysis of news stories, from the disputed 2000 presidential election to the war in Iraq to the political battles of 2004, reveals that this booming right-wing media market is largely based on bigotry, ignorance, and emotional manipulation closely tied to America’s long-standing cultural divisions and the buying power of anti-intellectual traditionalists. Writing with verve and deep insight, Brock reaches far beyond typical bromides about media bias to produce an invaluable account of the rise of right-wing media and its political consequences.

It's the Gospel, Baby! - Baron Cruelty -
This book did not open my eyes for the first time. What it did do is confirm many of my suspicions. Once upon a time, I used to love watching Hannity and Colms, as well as O'Reilly; I even listened to Limbaugh and loved him. Back to what I was saying. It is frightening how much power the media has over our lives today. Even scarier is that the super rich use that media to--for lack of a better word--brainwash every last one of us into supporting their interests, instead of our own. You don't believe me, there is video footage of the most famous media owner in the world Rupert Murdoch proving most of what this book covers--look it up on youtube. Anyways. Read the book with an open mind then use the scientific method and research what David Brock has written. It's important that everyone does or we will end up a nation with the equivalent of Stockholm Syndrome. Network, Cable and print News are not our friends, none of them are; they are the equivalent of the Fox in the Hen house. Wake up America, we are living in Airstrip One and most of us don't even know it. Lastly, proof that David Brock is honest and right... George W. Bush in 2004 election. Why were people more interested in Michael Jackson's molestation case on the lead up to the election? And why do most people not have a clue about the "Downing Street Memo" an official British document that proves that Bush had his mind made up in 2002, to invade Iraq? Because the media ignored it, media owned and run by Republicans and their Rich conservative buddies.

AN IMPORTANT BOOK TO READ AGAIN, IN THE OBAMA AGE - Miguel Tuason - USA
There was a time in this country when there was no distinction needed between left or right media. There was a time in this country when people were allowed simply to think for themselves. The media was the media. Their objectivity had been a given.

Except for one instance in his long career (when he let slip his opinion about the Vietnam War), the late Mr. Cronkite's reporting was never characterized as "biased." Back then, America hadn't yet been conditioned to be suspicious of media reporting during his time.

After Watergate, especially, everything began to change.

The neocons or "right wing elites", sensing a progressive movement (which was happening organically, globally), organized to discredit media and paint them as "liberal" in order to paint the country as more conservative than it actually was.

Discounting the profession's inherent aspiration to objectivity, they exposed voting habits of media... and used very false methodology to create the illusion that the media was a lot more liberal than the rest of the nation...

... In the end... From the late 1970s, the right wing "elites" were able to toss the media into the "center of political conflict in the US" [The Republican Noise Machine, by David Brock].

It's really sad and pathetic, actually, that media today is nothing more than a place where like-minded people go (left or right) to be told things with which they already know they'll agree.

And the divide grows wider.

It is time to read or re-read this 2004 book by David Brock.

Don't you mean the "Left Wing Media"? - Alexander Curtis -
This book is a sham. It is directly focused on the Republican side with no coverage over the Left-wing media--which is everywhere. Did the right-wing media go after Obama's or Clinton's children? Hell no. But did that stop the LEFT-WING MEDIA AND HOLLYWOOD from going after Sarah Palin and her children in a most detestable manner? Absolutely not! But, oh yea its us Republicans that are bad--shame, shame. What a joke. What did Hollywood do this last election? They won an election. Now, we have a Socialist President who is destroying the very principles our country was founded on. Anyone who believes that the tactics by the Democrats and their left-wing agenda are just, are just idiots. Note to Hollywood and all you Left-wing Democrats, thanks for your part in the dismantling of the United States, which won't be united much longer!
